As we leap into 2025, many of us are setting new goals. Whether you’re aiming for a promotion, a complete career pivot, or just looking to test the waters, one thing is clear: your CV needs to be in top form. After all, a polished CV could be the difference between landing your dream job or being passed over.

But be warned: there are some serious CV blunders that could derail your efforts before you even get started. In this post, we’ll cover practical steps to revamp your CV, sprinkle in some advice to make it sparkle, and share some hilariously cringeworthy examples of what not to include.

A summary that sends recruiters to sleep

Think of your CV summary as your opening line at a party – it’s got to grab attention. Yet too often, people default to vague, uninspiring phrases like:

“Talented all-rounder seeking an exciting opportunity in a dynamic company.”

Yawn.

Instead, be concise and specific. Focus on your unique achievements and the value you bring. For example:

Spelling errors: the silent CV killer

Typos and grammatical mistakes are the ultimate CV red flags. A recruiter’s logic is simple: if you didn’t care enough to proofread your application, how much effort will you put into the job?

Design like a pro, not a Picasso

While it’s essential to stand out, don’t sacrifice readability for creativity. Bright colours, elaborate fonts, and quirky layouts can distract from your content. Stick to clean, professional formatting, and let your achievements do the talking.

  • Avoid this howler:
    Submitting a CV using Comic Sans font or clip art. Unless you’re applying for a clown school, keep it classy.

Add personality (but not too much)

It’s great to show some personality on your CV – after all, recruiters want to hire humans, not robots. A well-chosen hobby or interest can make you more relatable and memorable.

That said, avoid oversharing. A line about your passion for marathon running or baking sourdough is fine. A paragraph on your conspiracy theory blog? Maybe not.

    Listing ‘competitive napping’ or ‘prosecco appreciation’ as hobbies. (Yes, these are real examples. No, they didn’t get hired.)
