In today's fast-moving job market, getting noticed isn’t just about experience and skills – it’s about knowing how technology is shaping the recruitment landscape. Love it or hate it, the reality is that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now involved in nearly every part of the hiring process, particularly in the initial screening of candidates – something we discussed in our recent blog on how to beat AI in your job application. While this can help recruiters streamline admin-heavy processes, for job seekers it presents a new challenge: how do you ensure you're seen by the right people (and machines)?

As recruiters, we see firsthand how candidates fall through the cracks – not because they lack talent, but because they don’t understand how AI works in recruitment. Here’s our advice to help you stay visible and relevant in this new age of automated hiring.

Understand how AI is used in recruitment

It’s a common misconception that only big corporations use AI. The truth is most applicant tracking systems (ATS), even in smaller companies, have AI elements embedded. These tools can read and filter CVs, match candidate profiles to job specs, and even shortlist applicants based on keyword density.

However, the human touch is far from dead. In fact, many recruiters (The Works Search included) still review applications manually. That said, if your CV doesn't pass the AI scan, it might not even make it to a person’s desk. Let’s fix that.

CV optimisation – it's all about keywords

Your CV is your first impression – and AI is judging it before a human does. That means it needs to be more than a list of responsibilities. It needs to be a strategic, keyword-rich document tailored to the roles you're targeting.

Here’s how to tailor it:

  • Analyse job descriptions in detail. What specific skills and qualifications are they asking for?
  • Use tools like ChatGPT to extract common keywords across multiple job ads.
  • Integrate those keywords naturally into your CV and LinkedIn profile.
  • Ask AI to tweak, not write your CV. Fully AI-generated documents are obvious – no one says “navigate” and “moreover” in real life!

Formatting still matters – yes, really

Even if you ace the keywords, poor formatting can let you down.

Stick to these golden rules:

  • Use clear, professional fonts like Arial or Calibri – and definitely not Times New Roman.
  • Font size should be 11 or 12 for easy readability.
  • Avoid garish designs, colours, or graphics – particularly in the UK, where recruiters tend to prefer minimal, clean layouts.
  • Make your CV easy to scan, with clear headings and bullet points.
  • Ensure consistency across documents – mismatched dates between your CV and LinkedIn will be noticed.

Optimise your LinkedIn profile – or get overlooked

Recruiters use LinkedIn’s powerful AI algorithms to search for candidates. But if your profile is incomplete or lacks detail, you might never show up in a search.

Top tips to boost your visibility:

  • Add industry-specific keywords to multiple sections – job titles, summaries, and role descriptions.
  • Don’t just list your job titles; explain what you’ve delivered.
  • Write a strong, keyword-rich headline that reflects the job you want, not just the one you have.
  • Keep your profile updated with recent achievements.
  • Fill out every section. LinkedIn even offers free tutorials to guide you through it.

Use AI to supercharge your networking

Networking still plays a crucial role in landing interviews. The difference now? AI can make it more strategic.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Use ChatGPT to research target companies and identify key contacts.
  • Ask for insights like “Which companies are hiring Heads of Comms in real estate in London?” – you might be surprised by what it turns up.
  • Use AI tools to help draft personalised connection requests – but always humanise them before hitting send.

Interview prep: let AI be your coach

You can use AI to prepare smarter – not just harder – for interviews.

  • Use ChatGPT to research the company, its values, recent projects and market standing. Always double-check facts, especially dates or figures.
  • Craft intelligent questions that reflect your understanding of their business.
  • Practise articulating your understanding of AI – many hiring managers now ask how you’re using AI in your current or previous roles.

Mock interviews and feedback – powered by AI

AI-powered interview prep tools are improving rapidly – some even let you simulate interviews using voice recognition and provide real-time feedback.

  • Use ChatGPT’s voice mode to practise answering industry-specific questions.
  • Review your communication style and refine your delivery.
  • Don’t be surprised if your next interview is transcribed using an AI note-taker – it helps the interviewer stay engaged with you instead of scribbling notes.

Salary benchmarking and market insights

Wondering what salary to ask for? AI can help here, too.

  • Use platforms like Payscale, Glassdoor, or even AI chat tools to research industry salary norms.
  • Prepare your negotiation strategy based on current data to show you're informed and confident.

AI literacy Is now a job skill

Employers want to know that you understand how AI is shaping the workplace.

  • Get comfortable using tools like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot and other job-specific AI applications.
  • Be ready to talk about how you use AI in your own role – or how you’d like to.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Emphasise ethical use – especially in roles that involve communication, data, or public trust.

Stay ethical and stay you

Tempted to let AI do all the hard work? Think again.

  • Never submit a fully AI-generated application – it’s obvious and undermines your authenticity.
  • Maintain your unique voice. Recruiters are not just looking for skillset matches – they want cultural adds, not just cultural fits.
  • Be cautious with personal data. Remove your address, phone number, or other sensitive information before uploading your CV to online platforms.

Final thoughts

AI can’t replace your creativity, drive, or professional story, but it can be your ally if you use it wisely. By understanding how AI works in recruitment and using it strategically, you’ll position yourself as a modern, proactive candidate ready for the future of work.

It’s not about beating the system. It’s about knowing how to work with it – so you can finally get found.
