A few festive drinks too many?  Try these quick fixes for the party season!

December has arrived, which means the party season is very likely well underway.  For the next few weeks, we’ll be navigating one client social function after another and quite possibly becoming a little too familiar with that ‘morning after the night before’ feeling.  

We all know the score. ‘Just a couple of drinks’ turns into a lot more than you had planned and you ended up over-indulging.  You’ve got a pounding headache, your stomach is playing a mini symphony and your mouth resembles an uncharted region of the Sahara Desert.  Welcome to party season!

The good news is that we’ve unearthed a few tricks to help you enjoy the festivities with a bit less suffering and better still, may even give you a much-needed health boost.

Sounds suspicious, right?  You probably think we’re going to list all the tried and tested tips:

  • Abstinence is the sensible option
  • Try to alternate each alcoholic drink with a soft drink
  • Down at least a litre of water (and a couple of nurofen) before bed 

While these standard nuggets of wisdom are not to be sniffed at, they never seem to be quite enough.

Here are a few ideas that may sound a bit off the wall but may well hold the key to breezing your way through that heavy social calendar.

Try a cocktail  – a Milk Thistle Cocktail…

Milk thistle is a popular herbal remedy for a hangover as it helps protect the liver.  Take it before and after your night out.

  • Add 10 drops each of milk thistle and echinacea tinctures to a large glass of water.  Drink one before you head off to the party and another one when you get home. 

(Milk thistle comes in capsules too and are not only a great hangover cure but a good daily pick me up.  Stock up immediately!)

Be creative with your office party drinks

Why not offer to make a mystery cocktail for your colleagues? This very powerful drink contains the cleansing wonder that is wheatgrass.  You don’t have to tell the team what’s in the cocktail – in fact you can make a game out of it and make them guess.

All you need is:

  • 2 pints wheatgrass (available at most good health stores)
  • 2 mint sprigs
  • 30 oz vodka

Blend all ingredients together and boom!

You’ll get all the benefits at the same time as the buzz. Packed with chlorophyll, vitamins, antioxidants, and enzymes, there’s not much that this powerful detoxifier doesn’t do!

Matcha for the morning after

We all know about the benefits of green tea but for a real health kick, go for the premium grades of powdered green tea known as matcha.

A powerful detoxifier brimming with more antioxidants than you can shake a stick at, matcha is considered one of the most powerful super foods on the market today.  It’s not cheap but if you do end up waking up feeling worse for wear, you’ll be glad you shelled out for some.

Matcha is a wonderful alternative to coffee, which is too dehydrating to drink with a sore head.  With less caffeine, matcha comes without the jitter and the crash that a double shot espresso is going to give.  What you will get is a 4-6 hour sense of sustained energy. 

Mix a small teaspoon of matcha very thoroughly with a splash of boiled water to make a concentrate.  Then pour in some hot steamed milk and enjoy a latte that’s going to get you through the day.
