In this incredibly competitive job market, securing an interview is a big achievement, which means that the pressure is really on. You understand the need to do all you can in terms of practical preparation – buy a new suit, research the company and prepare your questions – yet you can’t seem to shake off the feeling that it’s all going to go pear-shaped. You start to fret that the other applicants are going to be more impressive and better qualified than you. In short, your mind becomes so occupied with doubts and negative thoughts that you end up anticipating failure.

One of my top reads for this year has to be ‘Gung Ho!: How to Motivate People in Any Organisation’ – a brilliant book that uses the behaviour of animals to demonstrate how people should interact in order to work more productively and make organisations more successful. If you’ve ever wondered why geese are so incredibly noisy when they fly overhead then I have the answer. They’re cheering each other on – not just the goose at the head of the group, the whole group. Honk! Honk! Honk! Which got me thinking – are all the members of my team honking like geese at each other to create a culture of praise and recognition?

When Richard Branson was recently challenged to come up with a list of 65 lessons learned in business, I found myself nodding in agreement to most of the ‘gems’ on his list. Statements such as ‘Be passionate’, ‘Love what you do and do what you love’ and ‘Be your own champion’ are wonderful mantras and important practices to follow. We may have years of experience and a broad range of expertise in business, but all leaders – Heads of Comms and Richard Branson included – should take time out every so often to take stock of where they are, how they’re doing, and what they can do better. We are not just filling existing roles but now actively seeking talent to fill an influx of new roles that are being created.
