It’s a well-known fact that progressing your career can leave most comms professionals frustrated and scratching their heads. In a recent survey, lack of progression came as the number 1 reason for losing your staff. Surely it is time to get some clarity on the situation. What do you do as a Head of Comms wanting a seat at the board table? Or an agency Director wanting the next step up? Do you know how to go about it? Or perhaps you want to move from agency to in-house, like many PR professionals.

Resolutions are typically focused around attempting to deny your own deeply ingrained habits – the usual suspects; drink less, give up sugar, go the gym every day. Whereas goals are usually set with a view to where you want to be at the end of the year – a vision of where you will be on your career path, where you want to have travelled to, your financial situation. In this incredibly competitive job market, securing an interview is a big achievement, which means that the pressure is really on. You understand the need to do all you can in terms of practical preparation – buy a new suit, research the company and prepare your questions – yet you can’t seem to shake off the feeling that it’s all going to go pear-shaped. You start to fret that the other applicants are going to be more impressive and better qualified than you. In short, your mind becomes so occupied with doubts and negative thoughts that you end up anticipating failure.

One of my top reads for this year has to be ‘Gung Ho!: How to Motivate People in Any Organisation’ – a brilliant book that uses the behaviour of animals to demonstrate how people should interact in order to work more productively and make organisations more successful. If you’ve ever wondered why geese are so incredibly noisy when they fly overhead then I have the answer. They’re cheering each other on – not just the goose at the head of the group, the whole group. Honk! Honk! Honk! Which got me thinking – are all the members of my team honking like geese at each other to create a culture of praise and recognition?
