Flexible working is a benefit that sits high on most employees’ priority lists, especially as expectations change with regard to their careers and work-life balance. Let’s face it, we live in an age where it's no longer the case that every employee needs to be in the office all the time, working long hours to be productive.

Flexible working, whether it’s working one day a week from home, job sharing, or working ‘off-peak’ hours, can improve productivity and morale, and it should lead to reduced overheads and increased loyalty for the company. In fact, there are all kinds of reasons why offering flexible working within your organisation is a no-brainer.

I was surprised to read in a recent BBC news article that only 6% of people in the UK now work the traditional workplace hours of 9am-5pm. A YouGov survey polling 4,000 adults found that almost half of them work flexibly, allowing them to juggle other commitments. When it comes to levels of employee job satisfaction and overall happiness in the workplace, we hear time and again that work patterns that don’t fit the 9-5 mould matter as much as salary. The Works Search Annual Salary Guide 2017/18 took a close look at company benefits and the other factors that professionals across the industry in corporate communications and financial communications place a high value on when it comes to their jobs. Our survey found that flexibility in the workplace is high on the priority list of both male and female comms professionals.

For the 60% of female respondents, the one company benefit that would make the biggest difference to how they feel about their jobs is, unsurprisingly, flexible working. But flexible working isn’t just about being a woman or a parent anymore; it’s what the millennial generation are coming to expect and it is something organisations should be embracing and seeking to embed wherever possible.
